Found in the Sawatch Mountain Assortment, the Mount of the Holy Cross (elevation 14,005 feet) is Eagle County’s most unique all-natural landmark.

Stories of a mountain with a big “cross of snow” filtered down from the Utes and the mountain guys in the early 1800s. In 1873, photographer William Henry Jackson captured an impression of the mountain whilst collaborating in the Hayden Expedition. Two snow-loaded, 80-foot deep ravines on the mountain formed an pretty much perfect cross.

The mountain has served as both of those a religious icon and an artistic inspiration given that that time. Artists, photographers and poets were amongst those people encouraged by the mountain.

In the 1927s, a community dentist, Dr. O.W. Randall, organized pilgrimages up Notch Mountain, which made available a stunning check out of the cross development. Hundreds of members hiked or rode horses up the mountain and participated in a spiritual assistance when they arrived at the major. The Tigewon local community household was constructed as a resting location for the pilgrims. A rock shelter on leading of Notch Moutain presented security from lightning and storms.

The formal pilgrimages had been halted in 1939 thanks to Earth War II. To commemorate Colorado’s bicentennial in 1976, the Town of Crimson Cliff the moment again arranged a pilgrimage to Mount of the Holy Cross. Considering the fact that then, the custom has been continued every single summer time by Mount of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Vail. Skiers, hikers, and others visit the mountain all 12 months.
